Deletion or I6E mutation of N1 enhances CD8⁺ central and effector memory T-cell (T_CM and T_EM) populations. Mice were infected intradermally with the indicated viruses and 28 days later populations of CD8⁺ or CD4⁺ CD44^hi CD62L^lo (T_EM) and CD44^hi CD62L^hi (T_CM) cells were counted from (a) the spleen or (b) the draining lymph nodes.
