Regimented scheme for the interaction of bacteria with substratum surfaces. Weakly adhering bacteria retain the planktonic phenotype, while strongly adhering ones die upon contact. In the interaction regime, bacteria are hypothesized to respond to their adhering state with differential gene expression according to the adhesion force value that they experience (5).
