Figure 17

Absorbed dose D as a function of depth z in water from unmodulated (pristine) proton Bragg peaks produced by a broad proton beam with an initial energy of up to 235 MeV. With increasing depth, the accumulation of range straggling tends to broaden the peak. Beams that are more penetrating therefore have larger distal falloff distances.
