mRNA expression data (left panel) and protein concentrations data (right panel) are highly structured. The plots show naive, biased Pearson correlation estimates between pairs of replicated measurements on the intersection of observed mRNAs/proteins; separately for replicates within experiments (solid) and across experiments (dashed). The thin black line in each panel shows the naive correlations between mRNA expression and protein replicates. The observed mRNA expression–protein correlations are comparable to the between-experiment correlations for both mRNA expression and protein levels. The top labels indicate the mean pairwise correlation between and within experiments.
