Learning Objectives of the Quality Improvement Initiative

• Understand differences between various types of pain
• Identify common pain syndromes experienced by residents in long-term care facilities
• Recognize non–pain-related factors (eg, depression, cognitive impairment) that affect how pain manifests in long-term care residents
• Recognize and apply appropriate tools for assessing pain in long-term care residents, including those with comorbidities or cognitive impairment
• Identify barriers to appropriate pain control in the long-term care setting and develop methods for overcoming these barriers
• Describe evidence-based treatment recommendations and regulatory components of pain management for long-term care residents, including evidence underlying nonpharmacological approaches
