Cytokine production by podocytes. Graph shows monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1; A) and IL-6 (B) production after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or S100A8/9. S100A8/A9 alone has little effect on podocyte MCP-1 or IL-6 production, whereas the combination of S100A8/A9 and LPS has a similar effect to LPS alone, increasing MCP-1 and IL-6 production compared to unstimulated cells (one-way analysis of variance). There is a nonsignificant increase in IL-6 after combined treatment, compared to LPS alone. P < 0.05.
