miR172c and AP2-1 control the root development of fertilized and R. etli-inoculated common bean plants. Root fresh weight (FW; A and B) and density of secondary roots (C and D) were determined in composite bean plants with transgenic roots overexpressing miR172c (OE172) or a mutated insensitive AP2-1 target gene (OEAP2m) as compared with control EV transformed roots. A set of composite plants was fertilized with full-nutrient solution for 10 d (A and C), and another set was inoculated with R. etli and watered with nitrogen-free nutrient solution for 21 dpi (B and D). Values represent averages ± sd from roots of eight independent composite plants each. Different lowercase letters indicate statistically different groups (ANOVA, P < 0.001).
