Lung inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness are cardinal features of asthma and COPD; they are also elicited in mouse model of OVA-sensitization and challenge. Enhanced expression of S100A12 in the lung could mediate the inflammatory responses or serve as a marker of the inflammatory process. Additionally, stimulation of ASM with S100A12 induced myocyte cell death, which in turn would limit the abundance of smooth muscle mass with the concomitant reduction in contractile capacity and production of immunomodulators. COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; OVA, ovalbumin; RAGE, Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products.
