X, fecal sample without growth on MCC; NE, ESBL-negative isolates with non-wild-type susceptibility to cefotaxime, including non-Enterobacteriaceae. Dogs with the same numbers shared the same household. If a fecal sample produced >1 isolate containing similar genes, the number of isolates is shown in parentheses. Of isolates with combinations of resistance genes, only ESBL-type genes are shown. The CTX-M-1/61 gene type is shown as CTX-M-1, CTX-M-15/28 is shown as CTX-M-15, CTX-M-2/20/44/56/97 is shown as CTX-M-2, CMY 2/61 is shown as CMY-2, and SHV-12/129 is shown as SHV-12. Sequence references were provided by the Lahey Clinic (http://www.lahey.org/studies), and the following GenBank accession numbers were used for characterization: AB263754 for TEM-1b, AY883411 for TEM-52c, and AF126444 for TEM-52StPaul.
