The pH is significantly higher in S. aureus-infected than in uninfected explants (two-way ANOVA, Holm-Šidák method; P < 0.002; the model included explant age [4 day and 7 day] plus infection [uninfected and infected] plus interaction; the latter was not significant [P = 0.97]).
