pH depth profiles in uninfected and S. aureus-infected explants. (a) Representative pH depth profile in uninfected and S. aureus-infected 4-day explants. (b) Histogram for mean pH ± SD in uninfected and S. aureus-infected explants. Values were calculated by pooling measurements from every 10 μm from the top to the bottom of the explant from three different explants. The pH is significantly higher in S. aureus-infected than in uninfected explants (two-way ANOVA, Holm-Šidák method; P < 0.002; the model included explant age [4 day and 7 day] plus infection [uninfected and infected] plus interaction; the latter was not significant [P = 0.97]).
