Neural retina specification in response to lens-derived BMP signals. At early neural tube to optic vesicle stages, the prospective lens ectoderm is located close to the optic vesicle. Neural retina cells are specified in response to BMP signals, which emanate from the prospective lens ectoderm. Prospective RPE cells are in contact with both the head ectoderm and neural crest-derived mesenchymal cells, whereas the prospective dorsal telencephalic cells are separated from the BMP-rich head ectoderm by neural crest-derived mesenchymal cells. At this stage, BMP activity suppresses dorsal telencephalic identity.
