FIG 3

Effect of PA-X on viral replication in vivo. (A) Viral replication in chickens. Groups of nine 4-week-old SPF chickens were infected intranasally with 103.0 EID50 of r-CK10, CK-PAX5 (PAX5), or CK-PAX3 (PAX3). At 12, 24, and 36 h p.i., three birds of each group were euthanized in order to collect organs for virus titration in eggs. (B) Viral replication in ducks. Groups of nine 6-week-old mallard ducks were infected intranasally with 105.0 EID50 of the indicated viruses. On days 1, 3, and 5 p.i., three birds of each group were euthanized in order to collect organs for virus titration in eggs. (C) Viral replication in mice. Groups of nine 6-week-old female BALB/c mice were infected intranasally with 105.0 EID50 of the indicated viruses. On days 1, 2, and 3 p.i., three mice of each group were euthanized in order to collect organs for virus titration in eggs. Means ± SD are shown. Asterisks indicate significant differences (P < 0.05) from results for r-CK10. The detection limit for virus titers in chickens and ducks is 101.48 EID50/g of tissue, and the detection limit in mice is 101.0 EID50/ml of the cleared tissue homogenate.
