Red asterisks indicate the loss of axonal profiles in the edges of the optic nerve that were instead filled up with low-density material. Right panels show the higher magnification images for the areas marked by the red dotted line in the images from Tg-MYOCY437H/+ and Tg-MYOCY437H/+/Sod2+/− mice. Degenerating axons in the higher magnification image of Tg-MYOCY437H/+/Sod2+/− optic nerve were identified by the lack of myelin sheath (black asterisks) and the presence of amorphous axoplasm, axolemma detachment, myelin debris or double myelination (red arrows).
