Scheme 1.

Testing a pharmaceutical with a paper analytical device (PAD). A crushed tablet or the content of a capsule is applied to the card. The card is stood upright in water, which wicks up the individual lanes to activate the color tests. After 3 minutes, the card is removed and laid flat, and a photograph is recorded in 3–5 minutes. Differences between the image of the result and images of test cards run with authentic pharmaceuticals are used to identify suspicious samples.
