A given cortical point responds linearly to inputs from surrounding points. In this example point-3′s firing rate increases nearly linearly with inputs from point-1 and point-2. Note that inputs from point-1 have a minimal effect on the output of point-3 because the connections between these points are weak. Such a small effect may go unnoticed in an experiment. The connection strengths between the points were we, 31 = wi, 31 = 0.02 and we, 32 = wi, 32 = 0.2. The color scale bar is in spikes per second (Spk/s).
