Association of N protein with viral RNA. The monomeric and dimeric forms of N require the 5′ terminus of the S segment for binding. However, this association is sensitive to increased ionic strength. Interaction of trimeric N protein is specific for RNA containing the 5′ and 3′ termini and is resistant to high salt concentrations.
