Autologous CD8+ T cells potently suppress extracellular human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). HIV-1 capsid p24 production was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in culture supernatants (mean ± standard deviation, n = 3) from elite controller-derived CD4+ T cells (days 326, 354, and 383) infected with HIV-1 BaL (A), as well as CD4+ T cells derived from chronically HIV-1–infected individuals (n = 3) (B) in the absence (closed) or presence (open symbols) of autologous unstimulated CD8+ T cells (at ratio 1:1). Each experiment was performed in triplicate, and data shown are representative of at least 2 independent experiments.
