a

Membership in the post-ICU functional trajectories was adjusted for the following covariates: age, sex, years of education, race, number of chronic conditions, primary discharge diagnosis of cardiac disease, ICU length of stay in days, mechanical ventilation, shock, cognitive impairment, depression, and physical frailty. Adjustment led to 2 participants moving from the post-ICU minimal disability group to the mild to moderate disability group.

b

Early death was defined as death occurring within 30 days of the hospital admission date. This group includes those who died in the hospital (n = 50) and those who died after hospital discharge but within 30 days of hospital admission (n = 20).
