Fig 2 — The eight fragments 1 to 8 are located on eight wooded ranges of hills. Shading within each fragment indicates the capercaillie distribution area. This area is broken down into spatial units (totally 44, of which 39 were surveyed), as exemplified by the inset for area 4. For the statistical analysis, each such unit was further divided into two subunits to improve the spatial resolution of our analysis.
