LCMV-pi cells remain sensitive to virus-induced mitochondrial apoptosis. A549 cells, HT-1080 cells, and MEF were either persistently infected with LCMV or mock infected. Cells were then superinfected with SeV (80 hemagglutinin units/ml) and VSV (MOI of 3) for 16 and 20 h. Activation of caspases 9 and 3/7 was measured as described in the legend of Fig. 1A. Data presented are normalized to levels of mock-treated, uninfected (u) cells (n = 3; means ± standard deviations). Statistical analysis was performed by one-way ANOVA, comparing results for LCMV-infected and noninfected specimens at each time point. P values are indicated. n.s., not significant (P > 0.05).
