WT and IL-1R−/− mice have similar numbers of injected alveolar macrophages, but IL-1R−/− mice have fewer injected neutrophils during L. pneumophila infection. WT or IL-1R−/− mice were infected with JR32 ΔflaA L. pneumophila intranasally. At 24 h PI, cells from the airway space and lung were isolated and loaded with CCF4-AM. The frequency and total number of injected airway alveolar macrophages (A), neutrophils (B), as well as pulmonary alveolar macrophages (C) and neutrophils (D) were quantified.
