The Soret band absorbance readings for Hb (a), haem (b) and Hz (c) fractions of a sample spiked with 100 μl of RBCs compared to a control sample containing 40 μl of 5 % parasitized RBCs under identical conditions. No significant change was seen in the haem levels of the Hb fraction (P = 0.57), the haem fraction (P = 0.52) or the Hz fraction (P = 0.33) of the sample spiked with 2.5 fold more RBCs than the control (unpaired two-tailed t-test, 95 % CI, n = 6). Both the control and spiked sample contained 107 parasites and were from the same culture
