A single collapsed category was created for 5-7 Criterion D symptoms because no soldiers in the not detected subgroup endorsed exactly 5 or exactly 7 Criterion D symptoms. A three degrees of freedom χ2 test was then used to test for significant differences in the distribution of Criterion D symptoms among those detected and not detected by the approximations.
