The size of each box and the associated percentages represent the expected proportions of benign/malignant outcomes (white/black boxes) or molecular results (white/dark gray boxes) at 32% (A) or 24% (B) thyroid cancer prevalence. The residual risk of malignancy (ROM) in nodules with negative/benign molecular results is [1-NPV] and the ROM in nodules with positive/malignant molecular results is PPV. The rate of unnecessary or potentially avoidable surgeries is the proportion of surgeries performed on nodules subsequently classified as benign by surgical histology.
