(a) Comparison between the two different cell–scaffold constructs tested in this study with (1) solely injected (gray) and (2) injected and glued cells (black) in the scaffold. Oxygen concentration depends on cell densities; when part (6×105) of the total cell count was centrally glued, a significantly lower oxygen tension was measured in the center of the scaffold (p<0.05 at day 1 and 4–10 in static culture). (b) Comparison of DNA analysis of statically cultured scaffolds with injected (gray) or glued cells (black) (0.5×106 stem cells/collagen disc) showed no significant differences between the two groups.
