Figure 2. Representative echocardiographic images of a patient with nosocomial healthcare-associated infective endocarditis involving an apparently normal-looking valve. The patient, a 72-year-old male, underwent uneventful surgery for colon cancer, but his recovery was complicated by fever and Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. Compared with his preoperative echocardiographic images, which showed apparently normal-looking mitral and aortic valves (A-C), follow-up echocardiography showed the development of typical vegetation (arrow) on both the mitral and aortic valves (D-F).
