To visualize these partial correlations, the independent and dependent variables were regressed onto the covariates using a linear regression. The resulting unstandardized residual variables were computed for each participant and saved, and then Pearson correlations were run on the residual variables. Residuals refer to variance left over in the correlated variables beyond variance shared with covariates.
