A speculative model of the role of TM9SF4 in the sorting of glycine-rich TMDs. Glycine-rich TMDs can ensure ER localization of a membrane protein, presumably by interacting with the well-characterized Rer1 retrieval receptor. Human TM9SF4 is localized in the Golgi complex and associates specifically with glycine-rich TMDs to ensure their transport to the cell surface.
