Degradation of the endoplasmic reticulum occurs normally in the absence of Livin. The distribution and fate of the endoplasmic reticulum was visualized with anti-PDI. In wild-type lenses, PDI immunofluorescence is strong in the lens epithelium and outer cortical fibers. The abrupt disappearance of PDI staining marks the boundary of the OFZ. The loss of PDI immunoreactivity in cells bordering the OFZ was indistinguishable in wild-type or conditional knockout lenses.
