Lactating mice were inoculated with PBS or 4 × 106 CFUs of S. aureus in the mammary gland and euthanized at the indicated times after infection. (A) Dynamics of S. aureus burden in a murine mastitis model. The mammary glands were harvested, homogenized, and quantitatively cultured in vitro. Each dot represents one mouse. (B) Histopathological changes in the mammary gland in a murine mastitis model. The mammary glands were harvested, fixed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (original magnification × 400). The data shown are representative of three independent experiments.
