Diversity by ORF conservation. Low SNP density regions of the genome were identified and were assigned to all ORFs of the HCMV genome. ORFs were classified according to herpesvirus conservation, and the number of significant low density windows per ORF was plotted as a function of ORF conservation. The P value represents results from a Kruskal–Wallis analysis. Core genes are conserved in the Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaherpesviridae, Beta-Gamma are conserved in the Beta- and Gammaherpesviridae, Beta are conserved in the Betaherpesviridae, and HCMV genes are not conserved across species. Red bars mark the group median, and black bars mark the interquartile range.
