Immunofluorescent staining of E10.5 eyes from wild type and Bmp4CKO embryos for the transcription factors Sox2 (A, B), Maf (C, D) and Foxe3 (E, F). All three proteins were present in the nuclei of wild type lens pit cells, while nuclear staining was undetectable in the surface ectoderm (prospective lens) of Bmp4CKO embryos. Sox2 staining also disappeared from the nuclei of cells in the prospective retina of Bmp4CKO embryos. For all sections, dorsal is to the left.
