High-level control states for each leg. The stance and swing phases are triggered by ground contact conditions. The signed horizontal distance between the COM and the ankle (d) normalized by leg length (d̃) is compared against two threshold parameters (d̃SI, d̃SP) to start swing initiation (SI) and stance preparation (SP), respectively. SI can also be started when the opposing leg makes ground contact (double stance).
