Table 1.

Criteria for the diagnosis of CTE [adapted from McKee et al 59]. Abbreviations: ATs = astrocytic tangles; CTE = chronic traumatic encephalopathy; NFTs = neurofibrillary tangles

  • 1
Perivascular foci of p‐tau immunoreactive NFTs, pre‐tangles and dot‐like and thread‐like neurites in the neocortex
  • 2
Irregular distribution of p‐tau immunoreactive NFTs, ATs and dot‐like and thread‐like neurites at the depths of cerebral sulci, often alongside penetrating blood vessels
  • 3
NFTs in the crests of the cerebral cortex located preferentially in superficial layers II and III, a feature especially prominent in temporal neocortex
Supportive features
  • 4
Clusters of subpial ATs in the cerebral cortex, most pronounced at the sulcal depths
  • 5
Subependymal ATs in the periventricular regions of the lateral ventricles, periaqueductal gray and lateral brainstem
