Domain structures of human and yeast SMN·Gemin2 complexes. A, the Gemin2-binding domain (G2BD) and YG box regions of SMN are highly conserved, but fungal SMNs lack the Tudor domain found in metazoans. Human and fly Gemin2 have been shown to bind a pentamer of Sm proteins (D1, D2, F, E, and G) during snRNP assembly (37, 38); strong conservation of Gemin2 suggests that fungal Gemin2 has a similar function.
