Core elements
  1. Implemented by a trained Latino gay man from the community who serves as peer instructor whom the participants find credible and trustworthy.

  2. Creates an open and informal atmosphere that is affirming and empowering of being gay and Latino, and uses culturally congruent messages and materials.

  3. Implemented during 4 sequential small-group sessions that build on one another. If a participant misses the first session, he cannot attend subsequent sessions.

  4. Uses DVD segments, modeling, role-play, and feedback to teach and practice skills and build participant self-efficacy related to negotiation and use of condoms.

  5. Addresses the challenges Latino MSM face in the socio-cultural environment, focusing on machismo, fatalism, homophobia, and discrimination.

  6. Implemented in Spanish.

  7. Implemented in a safe location.

  8. Provides personal stories about what it is like to live with HIV.

Key characteristics
  1. Designed for Latino MSM (may be adapted for self-identifying and non-self-identifying MSM, farm worker MSM, and transgender persons).

  2. Implemented in community-based venues.

  3. Delivered to about 10 participants per session.

  4. Used incentives to encourage retention in sessions.

  5. 4-hour long sessions.

  6. Sessions conducted once per week to allow participants time to practice new skills before the next session.
