Self-assembly of MAX1 monomers leads to a hydrogel made from a kinetically trapped network of fibrils, each of which contains a putative double-layered β-sheet structure comprised of β-hairpins. Four possible supramolecular structures are shown, differing in the nature of intermolecular alignments within and between the β-sheets.
