HE-stained caecum sections were scored (a, 1–4) for markers of inflammation (infiltration of lamina propria eosinophils, lamina propria lymphocytes, intraepithelial lymphocytes) and for the distortion of morphological features (villous stunting, villous epithelial injury, crypt distortion).
