Marital violence and injury variables are only applicable to the violence groups. Differences between Groups 2 and 4 on these variables were evaluated with t tests. Group differences for all other variables were examined using a multivariate analysis of variance with pairwise comparisons, controlling for mothers’ age. Numeric superscripts reflect differences between the group in that column and the groups designated by the superscript (p < .05).

*

F or t value significant at p < .05.
