Apoptosis of serum-starved dTHP1 cells exposed to MAA or MM. Apoptosis was measured by caspase 3 activity of the cells. The dTHP1 cells were serum starved (SS) to induce apoptosis in the presence of the MM (control)- or MAA-coated glass coverslips. After treatment, the coverslips were removed and cells were treated with NucView 488 substrate for 30 min. Staurosporine (STR, 1 µM) or staurosporine with caspase-3 inhibitor (STR+INH) was used as positive or negative controls of apoptosis induction, respectively. Fluorescence intensity was detected by fluorescence plate reader at 488-nm excitation and 520-nm emission (n = 3; error bars indicate SEM).
