The left panel shows chaotic and uncoupled dynamics when the birds cannot hear each other, while the right panel shows the generalised (identical) synchrony that emerges when the birds exchange sensory signals. The different colours correspond to the three hidden states for each bird. The synchronisation manifold for identical synchronisation would correspond to the X equals Y line.
