Accumulation of [³H]l-alanine (60 Ci mmol⁻¹) in the inverted membrane vesicles under a downhill solute potential. The inverted membrane vesicles were prepared from MLA301ΔalaE/pAlaE (A and B) and MLA301ΔalaE (C and D). [³H]l-alanine accumulation was assayed in the presence (A and C) and absence (B and D) of 2.5 mmol/L NADH. Extravesicular l-alanine concentrations for the transport assays are 50 mmol/L (●), 100 mmol/L (□), 150 mmol/L (▵) and 200 mmol/L (○). Values presented are the means of more than three independent experiments with standard deviations.
