Compared to adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD), healthy controls showed a stronger response to reward tokens in the ventral tegmental area/substantia nigra (VTA/SN). In both the (A) VTA/SN and (B) right parahippocampus, controls showed stronger activation in response to reward versus zero tokens, while the opposite pattern was observed in the MDD group. In controls but not depressed participants, the VTA/SN “reward minus zero” activation difference score was significantly, positively correlated with the memory advantage for rewarded images (data not shown).
