Figure 3. MDMs assist MCF-7 invasion through collagen gels.

After differentiating monocytes for 12 days, monocyte-derived macrophages were labeled with CellTracker blue then co-cultured with GFP-expressing MCF-7 breast cancer cells and allowed to invade through a collagen I gel. Confocal microscope was used to image the height of the gel and quantify the number of cells that invaded past 30 μm. (A) GFP-expressing MCF7 cells do not significantly invade into the collagen I gel without the MDMs, but (B) co-culture with the MDMs increases the invasion of the GFP-tagged MCF-7 cells.
