For crossings that are part of a directed circuit, only some of their valid partitions lead to trees. (a) A crossing v that is part of a directed circuit. (b) A valid partition of v into v1 and v2 that disconnects the graph and retains the circuit. Thus, the result is not a tree. (c) A different partition of v does yield a connected directed tree.
