Evolution of smartphone algorithms with respect to where they are carried: (a) assume the smartphone is firmly fastened to the body at a known location; (b) assume that the smartphone is located in the same area on the person’s body (whether it is held in the hand, placed in the chest or trouser pocket) throughout the day, but its orientation need not be fixed with respect to the body; (c) “state-of-the-art” algorithms are capable of identifying physical movement whether the device is held in the hand, or in a pocket of the individual’s clothing.
