Schematic representation illustrating VEGF-induced, MAPK/PKC-mediated GJ internalization in PAECs. VEGF binds to, phosphorylates, and activates VEGF receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases located in the plasma membranes of endothelial cells. Activated VEGF-receptor actuates MAPK and PKC signaling cascades to phosphorylate Cx43 at Ser-255, Ser-262, Ser-279/282, and Ser-368. Phosphorylated Cx43 can then interact with and bind clathrin adaptors and clathrin to mediate GJ endocytosis.
