Effect of SCD1 inhibition on palmitate-induced autophagy in INS-1E cells. A decrease in the activity of SCD1 changes the PL composition of cellular membranes and leads to defects in autophagic clearance because of impairments of autophagosome-lysosome fusion. Such prolonged stress interferes with ER function, which initiates mitochondrial collapse and apoptosis. Consequently, pancreatic β-cells exhibit decreases in insulin secretion and proliferation and finally cell death.
