Preference index (Ip) for α- pinene is constructed as the ratio of S. diaprepesi infective juveniles responding to α-pinene to those responding to blank arms in two choice olfactometers. Exposure is the amount of time in hours infective juveniles were kept in vials containing 1 μg/ml α-pinene. Postexposure is the amount of time in hours infective juveniles were kept in clean culture (i.e. plain water without additional chemical stimulus) after exposure and washing.
