Effects of aging on spatial suppression. At low contrast, both young and older adults exhibit spatial summation, with older adults showing a small, but a consistent threshold elevation. At high contrast, only young adults exhibit spatial suppression. Consequently, older adults outperform young adults at discriminating motion direction of large, high-contrast stimuli.
